My childhood summers were spent scrambling up mountains in the Lake District and sailing around the Mediterranean. Moments like this can give you a taste for wider and wilder places.
After finishing my geography degree, I was fortunate enough to travel widely across the world. Some highlights include hiking to the top of a glacial lake on Mt. Cook in New Zealand; swimming alongside whale sharks in Mexico and accompanying an anti-poaching patrol whilst working on a game reserve in South Africa. Wide and wild indeed.
Determined to combine my studies and passion I sought a career in travel, starting out in marketing for a luxury hotel group before working more closely with clients. I’m now very fortunate to lead the Client Relations team at Black Tomato. I feel privileged to be working for a group of people who’re always looking to discover the new, the different, the unknown; thinking thoughtfully first about the needs – and dreams – of our travelers, for whom we want to create the most memorable and remarkable trips of their lives. Put another way, if they aren’t happy, then neither are we.
'I'd never felt so small, so insignificant (in a good way)'
A closer look at MexicoTo me, travel provides moments that – sometimes – can truly humble you. Swimming with whale sharks in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez was one that comes most readily to mind. I’d never felt so small, so insignificant (in a good way), as I snorkelled beside these gentle, majestic creatures. They didn’t pay me any attention as they continued to weave their way through the ocean, their checkerboard-like white spots and patterns standing out against the deep blue waters.
It remains one of my favourite travel memories and I can’t wait to take my young son on a similar trip as soon as he’s old enough. I find that’s part of the joy of being a new mother; I get excited just thinking about all the travel memories we can make together as I show him my most loved (or most dreamt about) places across the globe.
