During its fraught civil war in the 1970s, Nicaragua became the byword for destabilisation and the machinations of cold and calculating men. It was during this period that Susan Meiselas took a now iconic photograph, of a member of the country’s rebel faction throwing – in mid act – a petrol bomb, while clasping a machine gun in the other. These days, Nicaragua has shrugged off its bloody past, and enters the world a far more stable, and inviting, place than such images suggest. A beautiful landscape of dense mangroves, moody volcanoes and warm-sanded beaches, Nicaragua – between the its Spanish colonial architecture and vibrant street culture – is quickly becoming a go-to holiday destination for the culturally curious. Care to join them?
Plump pelicans on the branch; deep, lush rainforest; mouthfuls of moreish quesillo. Nicaragua is as peaceful today as it was once violent. Many who come here are in search of its adventurous side, among the mountain lakes and verdant volcanoes which dominant this unswervingly beautiful landscape. Kick things off with a private tour of its thriving cities, including the country’s cultural hub of León – whose long, Pacific coastline offers white and black sand beaches, thick mangroves, and bird-filled estuaries. Colonial mansions, crocodiles, and sea turtles can be found in short distance from its thriving cities, where you’ll sample the invigorating melting-pot of this true entrepot.
The residences and luxury hotels of Nicaragua range from enviable eco-lodges and beachside resorts to Colonial-style mansions in the heart of the country’s bustling cities. From the new luxury boutique resort of Mukul – ‘secret’ in Mayan – to the rich colonial heritage of Plaza Colon, in the midst of generous and thriving Granada. Antique dark wooden furniture and floors set the tone for this slice of history.
Its rich wildlife and dazzling scenery have become a powerful draw for luxury honeymooners in Nicaragua. The 365 volcanic islets of Lake Nicaragua offer some of the most luxurious and romantic retreats amidst truly spectacular surroundings, where dense jungle overwhelms the banks, and where moody volcanoes shoulder the horizon.
