Benguerra Island
The Indian Ocean at its most private.
Part of the Bazaruto Archipelago and reachable only by helicopter from the Mozambique coast, Benguerra is the kind of place that recalibrates what a beach can be. The Two Mile coral reef just offshore hosts turtles, manta rays, dolphins, and humpback whales depending on the season, all within swimming distance of the shore. At sunset, a private dhow carries you between the sandbanks with champagne and no particular agenda. The lodges here — Azura Benguerra among them — hold very few guests at any one time, which is the point.
Quirimbas Archipelago
Remote islands, untouched reefs, and a coastline that rewards patience.
Stretching for 250 kilometres along Mozambique’s northern coast, the Quirimbas archipelago is where the Indian Ocean feels genuinely unexplored. The coral reefs here are among the most biodiverse in East Africa — untouched by the tourist trade that has altered so much of the region — and the islands themselves are inhabited by small fishing communities whose Portuguese colonial architecture has been left largely as it was. Azura Quilalea sits on one of these islands, with nine villas and nothing beyond the water. It is one of the most remote properties we use anywhere.
Bazaruto Archipelago
Whale sharks, dugongs, and the longest beaches you have probably never heard of.
The Bazaruto Archipelago is where you go to swim alongside creatures most people only read about. Whale sharks gather in these warm waters from October to March, and the seagrass beds of the shallower channels are home to one of the last viable dugong populations in East Africa — a species so elusive that many naturalists spend careers trying to find them. Above the waterline, the beaches are powder-white and almost entirely empty. The combination of extraordinary marine encounters and complete solitude is unusual anywhere. Here it is simply how things are.

The best time to visit Mozambique is from April to November, when the weather is dry and the Indian Ocean is at its most calm and clear. May to October is the peak window for snorkelling and diving — visibility on the Two Mile reef at Benguerra is exceptional during these months. Whale sharks are most reliably encountered from October to March, with October and November offering the best overlap of good weather and marine life activity. December to March is Mozambique’s wet season, with higher humidity and occasional cyclone risk on the northern coast. The south and islands remain accessible but the ocean can be rougher.
Mozambique is best combined with South Africa, making it one of the most natural pairings in African travel. The contrast is the appeal: South Africa delivers the big five game drives, Cape Town’s culture, and the Winelands, while Mozambique provides the Indian Ocean finale — private islands, coral reef snorkelling, and beaches where you are almost always the only guests. We most often pair Sabi Sand or Kruger with Benguerra Island, which requires a short flight from Johannesburg to Vilanculos and then a helicopter transfer to the island. Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe also pair well, giving travellers the full sweep of East Africa in a single journey.
Mozambique is exceptional for a honeymoon — private in a way that very few beach destinations can genuinely claim. The combination of empty beaches, intimate island lodges where staff-to-guest ratios often exceed one to one, private candlelit dinners on the sand, and the novelty of a destination most honeymooners have never considered makes it feel genuinely different. We most commonly pair a Mozambique honeymoon with South Africa, beginning in Cape Town or at a game reserve in Sabi Sand before the beach finale on Benguerra.
What makes a luxury Mozambique holiday different from a standard beach trip is the level of access, exclusivity, and curation that becomes possible with a specialist. The lodges on Benguerra Island and Quilalea accept very few guests at any one time — staff-to-guest ratios regularly exceed one to one, and the beaches you walk are genuinely private in a way that the Indian Ocean’s more visited coastlines cannot offer. The most common structure is four to five nights in a private game reserve — Sabi Sand and Dulini are our most recommended for the quality of big five sightings and the intimacy of the lodge — followed by a short flight from Johannesburg or Nelspruit to Vilanculos on the Mozambique coast, and then a helicopter transfer to Benguerra Island. The transition from the bush to the Indian Ocean, usually in the space of a single morning, is one of those genuinely arresting experiences that shifts the way you think about a continent.
