Perched on the Persian Gulf, a luxury holiday in Qatar takes some of our favourite aspects of the Middle East and delivers them in a way that few others have taken the time to see. Here, desert sands drift to reveal a thriving art scene that sits alongside ancient wonder and some of the region’s most authentic experiences. Spontaneous and original, Qatar is fast developing into so much more than a stop-over.

Qatar is undergoing a process of rapid growth. This much is undeniable. Luxury hotels, spas, and world-class restaurants open every day in Doha, its capital city. It has also, notably, become heavily invested in cultural activities, from being the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup (in 2022), to seeing the rise of a thriving Gulf arts scene. But it also has a low-key and traditional side, making it an unusual but rewarding getaway. Welcome to Qatar.
While it is best known for its wellness spas, glitzy restaurants, and swanky architecture, Qatar has one thing which its neighbours do not – a desert that meets the sea. Private tours of this opening country would do no worse than to take in its thriving arts scene, including the offering at the mesmerising Museum of Islamic Art in Doha – having hosted the huge furry sculptures of Takashi Murakami to intricately displayed collections of Safavid and Mughal-era calligraphic compositions. The view from the entrance way out over the sea is a piece of art in itself.
Qatar is well-known for its lusciously appointed and uber-modern hotels, which offer all of the wellness and spa facilities you could ask for in the world, as well as a launchpad to explore this growing city. Doha’s W Hotel is no exception – chic, elegant, and finished to perfection. It’s also within reach of the famous Souq Waqif and Katara Cultural Village, to keep yourself entertained.
Desert safaris out into the vast virgin desert have been a point of interest of travellers for many years. These terrains of dunes and sand are strangely inviting, but you could also hit the seas in your own private Dhow – enjoying a sunset dinner while taking in Qatar from an entirely different perspective, making for a honeymoon like no other.
