From wild camping in Wahiba Sands Desert, to palatial retreats in Muscat, Oman really is the pearl of Arabia.
Remarkably untouched, despite hiding in plain sight; a luxury holiday in Oman will take you beyond the bustling souks and ornate palaces of Muscat to discover local herdsmen out in the wadis and the pristine beaches of the Musandam Peninsula. Overwhelmingly atmospheric and steeped in history, our Travel Experts like Rob and Tom keep returning to this Arabian jewel to perfect our itineraries; whether it’s one more dune bashing excursion in Wahiba Sands Desert, another sailing adventure in the Gulf, or a stunning new hotel opening in Nizwa.
As ever, if you can’t see it here then we can still plan it for you.
Peer into the heart of the Arabian cultural with a hand-crafted itinerary of Oman, a country exuding a long-lasting legacy of tradition and culture. Untended wilderness greets luxury with open arms in the many peaks and valleys of this country’s diverse landscape. Wander the souks of Muscat with our on-site, private guide, and head to unchartered territory in Wadi Ghul, the Grand Canyon of the Middle East, all on a tailormade holiday by yours truly.
Due to its position on the Gulf of Oman, the surrounding sea of Muscat is teeming with fresh fish to feast on; from grouper and tuna to crab and crayfish. With a local chef to guide the way, head to Muttra Fish Market to select your catch of the day, choose fresh vegetables from sellers in between and pick up some local spices from Muttra Souq before a masterclass in local cuisine at the Crafty Kitchen.
While others flock to Australia and the Maldives to experience renowned diving and coral reefs, we’re here to advocate for Oman. A complete contrast from the desert and mountainous landscape of the rest of the country, the Arabian Sea is on the rise for marine life tourism. Intriguing and virtually undiscovered, hidden treasures are yours to discover while unearthing all that’s magical about these inviting and exotic waters.
Wahiba Sands
An ocean of sand dunes.
Given the name Wahiba Sands, guests know exactly what they’ll be expecting on a tour to this dramatic region of Oman. As if straight from the films, Wahiba Sands is miles upon miles of rolling sand dunes. Camels aren’t the only thing you’ll find here though – engaging local tribes and luxury Bedouin camps share the land harmoniously. Off the beaten path and full of wonder, your time here will be spent star-gazing, sandboarding, camel riding and marvelling at otherworldly landscapes. It’s time to step into Arabian Nights.
Muscat
Modern yet traditional, Oman’s capital is a taste of true Arabia.
A port city located in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat is a hub of Islamic culture and history. Narrow streets lead way to colourful markets and spectacular mosques, while the waterfront provides vistas of the Western Al Hajar mountains that are sure to take your breath away. More so, the city of Muscat is making a name for itself in luxury travel, and The Chedi Resort is only the beginning of this flourishing capital being on everyone’s radar.
Jebel Akhdar Mountains
Oman’s Grand Canyon.
A labyrinth of wadis and a place where roses, apricots and pomegranates flourish, Jebel Akhdar sits 150km from Muscat but feels like a different world entirely. Some 2,000 metres above sea level, in the midst of terraced orchards sits Alil Jabal Akhdar. A secluded hotel rustic suites handcrafted by local artisans and panoramic views over the gorge below, Alil Jabal Akhdar hotel truly is our hidden hideaway.

The best time to visit Oman is October to April, when temperatures are mild and the desert, mountains, and coast are all accessible and comfortable. December to February is peak season — warm days, cool evenings, and ideal conditions for Wahiba Sands camping and hiking in Jebel Akhdar. Summer (June to September) is extremely hot, particularly inland, though Salalah in the south experiences a unique monsoon season that transforms the landscape green.
Oman is a genuinely exceptional honeymoon destination — one of the few places in the Arabian Peninsula where dramatic wilderness and intimate luxury coexist naturally. A Black Tomato Oman honeymoon might combine private Bedouin camp dinners under a desert sky in Wahiba Sands with a paraglide arrival at Six Senses Zighy Bay, or a sunrise drive through Jebel Akhdar’s rose terraces. We design every honeymoon around how you want to feel, not a fixed schedule.
Oman’s highlights span an extraordinary range of landscapes. Wahiba Sands is one of the world’s great desert experiences — rolling red and white dunes with luxury Bedouin camps beneath star-filled skies. Jebel Akhdar sits 10,000 feet above the desert floor in the Al Hajar Mountains, with rose terraces, dramatic canyon views, and the remarkable Alila Jabal Akhdar hotel. Muscat rewards those who slow down — its fish market, Grand Mosque, and Mutrah Souq all offer genuine cultural immersion. The Musandam Peninsula’s fjord coastline is unlike anywhere else in the region.
Oman pairs exceptionally well with other destinations. Jordan and Oman together form a compelling Middle Eastern cultural journey — ancient Petra and the Dead Sea alongside Oman’s desert camps and mountain retreats. Oman and the Maldives work beautifully as a contrast pairing — wilderness adventure followed by pure beach luxury. Black Tomato manages both legs as a single seamless trip, with one specialist overseeing everything across multiple countries.
Oman is an underrated family destination — children respond well to its combination of adventure and accessibility. Dune bashing and sandboarding in Wahiba Sands, turtle watching at Ras Al Jinz, snorkelling in the Gulf of Oman, and nights in a Bedouin camp all provide the kind of engaged, memorable experiences that families return from talking about for years. Black Tomato builds age-appropriate itineraries that balance active days with enough downtime to keep the whole family comfortable.
The cost of a luxury Oman holiday depends on the duration, the hotels and camps included, and whether you’re combining Oman with another destination. Black Tomato designs each trip from scratch around your priorities and budget. Speak to one of our Oman specialists to discuss what’s possible for your trip.
