August
Let’s do something huge. With the summer holidays in full swing, this is about family adventures and untrodden expeditions. Set your sights on something unforgettable.
We’ve hand-picked the ideas below to get your mind racing about where to travel in August. As ever, our luxury travel experts are on hand to give you detailed guidance and expert suggestions in choosing your trip.
Where to visit in August
We feel excited even writing this. A fulsome family destination with a huge emphasis on wildlife, nature and conservation. The cormorants of Fernandina, the dolphins of Isabela, and the cloud forests of the interior. And Galapagos? You won’t believe your eyes.
August is the perfect month to discover Borneo’s dizzying array of wildlife. Plunge through ancient tropical trees and blooming orchids in search of macaques, tarsiers and proboscis monkeys or take a private boat to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and get up-close and personal with the last of Borneo’s wild orang-utans.
The alternative safari destination. There’s less about wildlife here and a greater focus on landscape. With Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei, and the Skeleton Coast. Great for couples and older families, it’s one of the world’s best locations for stargazing. Choose Namibia for something very different.
This summer, we’re letting you in on one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Morning game drives across the Savannah. Hippo-spotting canoe journeys on the Zambezi River. Helicopter rides above the roar of Victoria Falls. With so much variety, it is easy to see why Zimbabwe is one of our favourite intrepid safari destinations.
Our hand-picked recommendations for where to stay and what to do
The first safari is one of those long anticipated moments in the family travel calendar. It’s the holiday you talk for years about taking and that, on return, reminisce over fondly.
Our ‘best of’ itinerary. Framed around driving (the best way to take it in), you’ll experience the full, dramatic force of what Namibia has to offer. Exciting, refreshing, and very, very different.
This itinerary is built around food, ecology, eating and landscape (and the way these things interact). Co-created with world-renowned chef Virgilio Martinez. You’ll eat at Central, his restaurant, currently ranked 6th in the world. From Lima to the Sacred Valley and everywhere in between.
This classic experience starts you off in Quito, Ecuador (with emerging chefs and local artists), before taking in the Amazon and the Andes (for landscapes and ruins), and then diving head-first into the majesty of Galapagos (for wildlife and the exotic).
This is Iceland showcased in all its splendour. Perfect for everyone, it will take you to the sights you’ve heard of an yearn to pronounce. It will also take you off the well-trodden routes into the unknown. Into the centre of the earth, perhaps.
We love this family-friendly itinerary, showcasing Italy through a child’s eyes. Immersive, fun, unexpected. From gladiator school at the Colosseum to a more grown-up vibe at Puglia’s sublime Borgo Egnazia. This is one to remember.
