The Nile begins its journey in Uganda, winding north through vast savannah and lush riverbanks teeming with life. Queen Elizabeth National Park
Few landscapes in Africa are as varied or as beautiful.
Nestled between the snow-capped Rwenzoris and the vast waters of Lake Edward, Queen Elizabeth National Park is a patchwork of open plains, crater lakes, and dense forest. The Kazinga Channel teems with hippo and buffalo, while the southern Ishasha sector is famed for its rare tree-climbing lions. Beyond the wildlife, the park offers a sense of Uganda’s complexity—where wetlands, grasslands, and volcanic scars combine to create one of the continent’s most striking safari backdrops.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
A name that both daunts and delights in equal measure.
Bwindi is one of Africa’s most ancient rainforests, a mist-draped sanctuary for half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking here is as challenging as it is rewarding—dense foliage, steep ridges, and a symphony of forest life accompany the path to a face-to-face encounter with these remarkable primates. It is an experience that humbles and exhilarates, set in a place where time seems to stand still, and the forest truly earns its name.

The best time to gorilla trek in Uganda is during the two dry seasons — June to August and December to February — when trails through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest are more manageable and sightings are generally more reliable. That said, gorilla trekking is possible year-round; Uganda’s rainforest receives rain in every month, and the gorillas are resident rather than migratory, so permits can be secured throughout the year. The green season (March to May and September to November) brings fewer visitors, lower accommodation rates at some lodges, and lush, atmospheric forest conditions. Both countries offer extraordinary gorilla experiences, and the honest answer is that neither is definitively better — they are different. Uganda’s Bwindi is denser, wilder, and more challenging to navigate; the trek is longer and harder on average, but the sense of true wilderness is unmatched. Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is more accessible from Kigali, the lodges around Kinigi are some of the finest in Africa, and the trekking terrain is slightly more open. Gorilla permit costs differ, and Uganda’s permit quota is larger. Many of our clients do both — our Rwanda & Uganda itinerary is built around exactly this comparison. Uganda’s wildlife offering is broader than most travellers expect. Kibale National Park holds the highest density of chimpanzees in East Africa, and tracking them through the forest is a genuinely different experience from gorilla trekking — faster, louder, and often thrillingly unpredictable. Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and Ugandan kob, with the Kazinga Channel offering some of the best boat safaris on the continent. Murchison Falls National Park, where the Nile squeezes through a seven-metre gorge, adds giraffe, lion, and the extraordinary shoebill stork to the list. Uganda holds all of the Big Five, including black rhino in Ziwa. The wildlife breadth rivals Kenya or Tanzania, without the volume of vehicles.
