A paradise for wildlife lovers, Sri Lanka is easily the best place in Asia for experiencing a variety of animals in a variety of different landscapes. Yala National Park is famous for its leopard population, while Udawalawe is popular for elephant encounters. Others are known for their bird species and another for the elusive sloth bear, but all of them make for a memorable experience in Sri Lanka.
An exciting and alternative safari destination, embarking on a safari in Sri Lanka provides its own personal twist. Here, you’ll seek out elusive leopards in the wild with your expert naturalist guide, heading out on game drives to the quieter corners of Yala National Park, keeping your eyes peeled for sloth bears, barking deer, and Asian elephants. Galle
Amble the historic streets of Sri Lanka’s first colonial city.
Located on the island’s southernmost coast, Sri Lanka’s fourth-largest city is both modern and ancient; with its Old Dutch Quarter focused on a beautifully-preserved Fort, a colonial townscape, and time-warped landscapes. Atmospheric and bizarre, it’s a fantastic way to step back into the 17th and 18th century in this bejewelled corner of the world.
The cultural triangle

Once known as the King’s Zone, or Rajarata, the Cultural Triangle extends across the scrub-thick, moody uplands beyond Kandy; where jungle and outcrops of mountain dominate the landscape. Within this land can be found some of Sri Lanka’s greatest treasures, including the ruined capital of Anuradhapura (dating back to the 3rd century BCE) to the iconic ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya above.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka depends on which part of the island you are exploring. The southwest coast and hill country are at their best from December to March, when the northeast monsoon brings dry, sunny weather. The east coast — including Trincomalee and Arugam Bay — is best from April to September. The good news is that Sri Lanka’s size means you can usually find a region in good conditions at any time of year. Your Black Tomato travel expert will plan your itinerary around the weather patterns to make sure you experience each destination at its best.

Sri Lanka is an excellent honeymoon destination, offering a rare combination of ancient culture, stunning wildlife, rolling tea plantations, and exceptional coastal retreats — all within a single two-week trip. Couples often combine the atmospheric fort town of Galle with a wildlife safari in Yala and a beach finale at Cape Weligama or a private island extension in the Maldives. The island’s compact size means transitions between wildly different landscapes feel seamless rather than exhausting. We have been planning Sri Lanka honeymoons for over a decade and know exactly how to sequence the itinerary for the right mix of adventure and stillness.
A minimum of 10 nights is needed to do Sri Lanka justice and cover the island’s key regions without feeling rushed. Eleven to fourteen nights is the sweet spot — enough time to explore the Cultural Triangle in the north, spend a couple of days in tea country, take in wildlife in Yala or Wilpattu, and unwind on the southern coast. Shorter trips of 7 nights work well if you focus on one region, such as the south, or combine Sri Lanka with a short beach extension in the Maldives.
Yes, combining Sri Lanka with the Maldives is one of our most popular itineraries. Sri Lanka pairs naturally with the Maldives for a culture-and-beach combination that feels genuinely balanced rather than rushed. A short flight connects the two islands, making a 14-night trip — roughly 9 nights in Sri Lanka and 5 nights in the Maldives — very manageable. It works particularly well for honeymoons and couples who want the stimulation of a culturally rich destination followed by total, private-island seclusion.
Sri Lanka offers exceptional wildlife viewing, making it one of Asia’s best safari destinations. Yala National Park has the highest density of leopards in the world, alongside elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. Wilpattu, less visited than Yala, offers an equally rich leopard experience in a wilder, more remote setting. Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks are famous for the Elephant Gathering, when hundreds of elephants congregate around the reservoir between July and October. Blue whales can be spotted off the southern coast near Mirissa between November and April. We can build any or all of these into your itinerary.
