There are so many things to love about Spain. Most will cite its world-famous cuisine, filled with tapas trails and Michelin stars – others, its culture and its art. For us, though, luxury travel in Spain is not just about seeing the works of Gaudí or walking the shores of the Islas Baleares, it’s also about the connection we feel with the place and with its people; it is about discovering what it truly means to be Spanish.

Spain Highlights

Three words: sunshine, siestas and sangria. There’s no mystery as to why Spain is such a well-loved country. With a few aqua blue seas, miles of white sand and bucket loads of character and flavour, it is holiday heaven.

AN INTRODUCTION TO SPAIN

A country that gave rise to Flamenco and Surrealism (Dali’s museum, an hour train from Barcelona, is a prickly, powerful monument to modern art) is – of course – going to offer up a genuinely rich and layered experience. From hilly, food-forward Basque country, to the majestic sands of Mallorca, and the bustling culture of Barcelona, Spain is a country of countless opportunities folded into a surprisingly small package. It can take fewer than fourteen hours to cruise between Seville and the breathtaking North. You’ll want to linger a while longer, of course.* * and if you’re the restless type, you could even connect your Spanish honeymoon with one in neighbouring Portugal.

MALLORCA AND IBIZA

A luxury holiday on the Spanish mainland – whose very centre is marked by sprawling, ornamental Madrid – has much to offer, yet we can’t talk about the lush Iberian peninsula without mentioning its majestic beaches, islands, and coastal resorts. The secluded bay of Palma de Mallorca pours out a quite unforgettable dose of relaxation and rejuvenation, set amidst its baked-yellow former military fortresses, restaurants of firewood ovens and grills, and the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean, making Mallorca an obvious contender for any luxury European honeymoon.

IBIZA AND THE BALEARICS

The Balearic Islands are some of the most geologically magnetic places on the earth. Of course, they’re also metaphorically irresistible, which also explains why the Balearics are such an unforgettable honeymoon destination. Ibiza is intimate, sun-soaked, and calm. Meanwhile, only a boat ride away, the beaches of Formentera are some of the most famous in the world. Here you can indulge in fresh seafood on the shaded terraces, or take a private yacht out among the many deserted, secret islands that are scattered around this immaculate strip of coastline.

BARCELONA AND BASQUE COUNTRY

The old haunt of Picasso and Dali also has the highest number of Michelin stars per capita in the world. This beautiful, rugged, warm region of Spain has everything from mouth-watering pintxos eateries to some of the richest culture in the world. We could go on. From Barcelona’s Gaudi-stuffed streets; to the country’s best winemaking region, Rioja; and on to cultured, and culinary, Bilbao – home to that iconic outpost of the Guggenheim Museum.

TASTING NOTES WITH DANI LOPEZ

On the subject of food, we’ve crafted some truly luxurious, boutique holidays to Basque country that won’t fail to excite the senses. As part of our Tasting Notes itineraries, we’ve curated a specifically culinary travel journey from Bilbao to Getaria, by way of San Sebastian. World-class chefs Dani Lopez, Aitor Arregui and Elena Arzak whisk you off through the worlds of Basque eating – including the moreish and infinitely inventive pintxos to culinary masterclasses and private tours of local txakoli wineries, eating anchovies in Cantabria and attending a txokos – a secret 19th century dining club.

AN INTRODUCTION TO LUXURY HOTELS IN SPAIN

The luxury boutique hotels and resorts of Spain represent a truly vast offering – from sun-shaded beach-side nooks in majestic Mallorca to truly regal retreats in the heart of Seville. If you’re thinking about where to head for your luxury honeymoon in Spain, we suggest looking no further than these 5 star hotels across the country (many are even still unmissable in the still-warm midst of November).

BARCELONA – MANDARIN ORIENTAL

In a city of such unbeatable ease, leading Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola’s glamorously luxurious Mandarin Oriental is an ideal, and elevated, place from which to explore this culturally complex city; whether that’s Gaudi’s eye-breaking Park Guell or the twisting, medieval routes of the Gothic Quarter. From its rooftop terrace, you can drink in panoramic views of the entire city below, and is located, conveniently, on the prestigious Passeig de Gràcia, also known as the Rodeo Drive of Spain.

MALLORCA – CAP ROCAT

Mallorca feels like an outpost – albeit a majestic and beautiful one. It’s fitting, then, that the best place to rest your head here is at Cap Rocat; a luxury beach hotel nestled in a former fortress, accessed via a drawbridge. Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, it’s formidable and enviously luxurious boutique surroundings are but a short drive from the city centre – stuffed to the gills with authentic tapas restaurants and local boutiques. Marble floors and exposed walls are the signature for the suites at Cap Rocat. You just have to choose whether you want to face the mountains or the sea.*

SEVILLE – ALFONSO XIII

Nestled in the very heart of Seville, Alfonso XIII’s stunning, luxury rooms bring together elaborate and authentic Moorish interiors with contemporary, design-forward features. What’s more, it’s only yards away from the city’s charming cobblestone streets. Between its luxurious pool and gardens, the intricate hotel, on San Fernando street, abuts onto the old town centre of Santa Cruz, creating a true push and pull between staying in and rushing out of the door.

ANDALUSIA – FINCA CORTESIN

Set in the rolling foothills of the Costa del Sol – yet tucked away from the hustle and bustle – this stylish and award-winning hotel is a true homage to Andalusian architecture across its sixty seven boutique rooms. Set in the verdant, green expanse between Marbella and Gibraltar, this elegant beach resort brings together a rich mixture of the area’s Mediterranean and North African influence, which can be enjoyed in its private gardens, tennis courts, and golf courses.

SAN SEBASTIAN – MARIA CRISTINA

The grand, eye-opening edifice of the Maria Cristina has been a go-to spot for stars and celebrities during its shining life, but has also become known as the epitome of luxury in sumptuous San Sebastian. Surrounded by tranquil, palm-filled gardens and promenades, the hotel’s environs are a picturesque marvel, which can easily be enjoyed by its grand decor and exquisite guestrooms. What’s more, there are 16 Michelin starred restaurants in the city. Sixteen.
