In Italy – the home of my ancestors – they talk about ‘un colpo di fulmine’, a lightning bolt. It’s a feeling of immediate and unexpected surprise, even shock. And this is precisely what I felt when I made my first ever journey here at age fourteen. The frescoes of the Vatican; the staggered terraces of the Amalfi Coast; the endless refrain of ‘volare’ played on repeat. I was transfixed.
Later, the ‘storm’ would widen – from the star-scattered skies of the Atacama Desert to the great outdoors of Nevada.
As a Travel Expert, it’s my job – and, ultimately, my pleasure – to create these lightning bolts for our travelers, and not just in Italy. Put another way, if you’re interested in Europe, Latin America, or the USA – my areas of specialty – then there’s a good chance you’ll talk to me.
'We danced on the dock over the lake, under the stars'
My husband and I were with our guide, Lilo, for the duration of our short stay in Bariloche, Argentina.
On the final night, Lilo mentioned that he’d organized a pizza-making dinner at Fuegos (a lakeside restaurant and beach club). When we showed up, we were amazed by all the special personalised touches Lilo organized, with the utmost intention. My husband is big into spirits, so Lilo asked a local woman who makes her own gin to have a DIY gin and tonic station with an abundance of botanicals, and as I don’t eat meat, he had made sure there were plenty of vegetarian options. To really cap off the night, knowing my husband and I had met at Burning Man festival, Lilo had some of his friends come by – one of them a DJ – who set up his decks at the end of the dock for a silent disco. Headphones on, we danced on the dock over the lake, under the stars. It moved us to tears and is probably one of the best nights of our lives – filled with love, new friends, and great vibes. Just like the day we met.
