I studied Italian at college, but it was a year of living in Bologna – with a host who spoke not a word of English – that helped me to get to grips with Italy ‘as it is’.

In that city they call ‘la dotta’ (the learned one) – for its university that dates to 1088 – I learnt more than just the language. Returning to America, I understood what it means to get incredibly close to a country, to live as a ‘citizen’ rather than passing through like a ‘tourist’. For me, it was home.

As a Travel Expert, I spend a lot of time talking with travelers about the places they’d like to sink roots – to get truly close to a destination, even if they’re traveling for seven short days. We’ll work together, learning what makes you tick and how you really want to see the world. While most people won’t travel for 365 days, we aim to give them an intimate insight into places that make them feel like I did in Bologna: at home.

'It still calls my name'

A closer look at Norway

A place that still calls my name is Norway’s Lofoten Islands. Where red and yellow fishermen’s huts cling (somewhat precariously) to the shore and granite peaks tower above. There’s the mighty Lofoteveggen – or the ‘Lofoten Wall’ – with its chain of mountains that extend across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea. Plunging fjords, hidden beaches. I loved exploring each one and was blown away – partly due to the breath-taking views, partly due to the icy wind.
