Segera Retreat, Laikipia
Segera is among Africa’s finest safari lodges. Spread across a private 50,000-acre conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau in northern Kenya – reserved entirely for Segera guests – this family-owned Big Five retreat is equal parts adventure playground and open-air gallery. Wild walking, helicopter flights, bush sleepouts, fishing, stargazing, long lazy meals, spa downtime, and community encounters fill the days, while sweeping views of Mount Kenya fill the frame. Segera feels like a true home in the wild, and its combination of experiences makes it unlike any other lodge in Africa.
LOCATION
Malaria-free, Big Five territory, and entirely private, Segera’s 50,000-acre conservancy on Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau sits just a 40-minute flight from Nairobi and just over an hour from the Maasai Mara, with guests arriving directly into the conservancy. In 2025, Eastern black rhino returned to these plains for the first time in 60 years, now living alongside guests as remarkable neighbours.
YOUR ROOM
Ten distinctive villas perch above the botanical gardens, each one framing views across the Laikipia savannah. Natural palettes of pale wood and local stone give the interiors an earthy warmth, while every private deck comes with sun loungers, a swing bed, and a sunken bath. Contemporary African sculptures from the Zeitz Collection dot the gardens and communal areas. For families and groups, the private multi-story houses deliver generous bedroom configurations, private pools, and dedicated staff – everything needed to settle in for the week. Each villa also comes with its own private vehicle, offering complete flexibility from the moment you arrive.
WHO IT SUITS
Segera suits anyone with an appetite for more than a game drive. Couples settle into their own private villa and let the days unfold between private game drives, spa treatments, sundowners, and art walks. Families with children of all ages are fully accommodated, with activities as rich in learning as they are in adventure: planting seeds in the permaculture gardens, time with the anti-poaching canine unit, and cultural encounters with the Samburu, Turkana, and Borana communities. Segera also works perfectly for exclusive-use group celebrations.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Segera is an anomaly in every sense – romantic, untamed, and deeply welcoming, with a team that creates the feeling of a family home in the bush. While wildlife viewing is exceptional, the experience extends far beyond game drives. Guests can explore the sculpture garden, relax at the spa, enjoy remarkable dining in unexpected locations, or embark on helicopter journeys into northern Kenya. For something unforgettable, the Bird’s Nest sleepout places guests above the bush with 360-degree views of wilderness and Mount Kenya. Segera is a truly unique property and experience.
SUSTAINABILITY
Family-owned and guided by a strong conservation ethos, Segera runs entirely on solar power, eliminates single-use plastics, and provides purified water in reusable glass bottles. The Zeitz Foundation supports six award-winning Waterbank schools educating more than 1,800 local children, while the SATUBO beading collective empowers local women through community enterprise. In 2019, Segera launched East Africa’s first all-women anti-poaching Ranger Academy; two cohorts have since graduated and are now employed across the conservancy. Segera is also the founding member of The Long Run, a highly respected global network of nature-based tourism pioneers committed to the 4Cs framework – Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce – ensuring that sustainability is not aspirational but independently measured and actively delivered on the ground.
