Macau
Pousada de Sao Tiago
Built in the 17th Century as a Portuguese fortress designed to defend Macau against European invasion and pirate attacks, Pousada de Sao Tiago offers up a whole lot more than your average hotel. Lovingly restored but still maintaining a strong sense of its past, the building is literally dripping with character and charm and even houses its own chapel dating back to 1740. With just 12 stylish suites, this is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet.
location
Hidden away amongst the trees of Praia Grande Bay, Pousada de Sao Tiago is perched on the very tip of the Macau Peninsula. Although this is one of Macau’s most popular spots, its sleepy surroundings provide a quiet escape in easy reach of the action should you find yourself in need of a night on the town.
your room
Ornate wooden beds piled high with silk cushions, elegant chaise lounges and floor-to-ceiling doors opening straight out onto your own private balcony, the rooms here are both spacious and indulgent. Large bathrooms feature rainforest showers and steam rooms as well as hidden mirror TVs for long soaks in the tub. Enjoy watching the sunset over the Inner harbour of Macau and the Pearl River Delta, wine glass in hand, and feel life’s stresses slip away.
why we like it
With such a rich history, you can’t help but fall for Pousada de Sao Tiago’s charms. Dine out on the spacious terrace or feast on Iberian Ham and Paella in the Spanish-style restaurant La Paloma, before retiring for after-dinner drinks in the chic Cascata Bar. For those who can’t stand to be without their four o’clock cuppa, the hotel even offers afternoon tea to give you a home-from-home you might find hard to leave.
