Quinta Chanabnal, Palenque
Painting a picture of a time long past, the Quinta Chanabnal is an exercise in archaeological re-creation dressed up as a boutique, luxury hotel. Thatched roofs, carved-stone friezes and a stepped ceremonial pyramid are just a few of the architectural details used to create the properties seven luxury suites. The hotel’s restaurant serves local Chiapas cuisine alongside a typical Mayan menu. You must experience the menu of meats, roasted over hot coals served and prepared under a traditional Mayan Palapa (open-air hut).
Location
Quinta Chanabnal is located a mere three kilometres from the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Palenque, dating back to 226 BC. Spend your days exploring the expansive ruins and return to the hotel and get a taste of the Mayan lifestyle amidst the surroundings of lush tropical flora and fauna in the tranquil waterfall pool. Quinta Chanabnal’s location on the edge of a rainforest reserve makes it a wildlife sanctuary with frequent visits from tree frogs, howler monkeys and macaws – a nature lover’s dream.
Your room
Rooms are an eclectic mix of traditional and opulent. Thatched roofs and terra cotta floors are paired with grand hand-carved wood furnishings and large Italian marble bathrooms. All rooms are fitted with king-size beds dressed in Egyptian cotton, gold satin and embroidered silk. Fresh-cut exotic flowers, wooden artefacts and traditional artwork decorate the rest of the space. Fit for Mayan royalty, the presidential suite is housed in a private bungalow topped with a carved-stone pyramid surrounded by Mayan statues. The room is highlighted by a majestic four-poster bed draped in luxurious white fabrics.
Why we like it
The passion for preserving this certain period in history shines through in every element at Quinta Chanabnal. The resident Mayan scholar, and owner of the hotel, is glad to complete your experience by sharing as much knowledge on the Mayan people as you care to learn. We were fully impressed by the hotel’s commitment to creating a wholly immersive Mayan experience.
