Riad Laaroussa, Fez

Riad Laaroussa is an oasis in the heart of the medina of Fez. This 17th century palace is a beautiful display of Islamic architecture. Lofty, pointed archways and a traditional central garden, in this case dotted with orange trees and a babbling fountain, greet you upon entrance. If the courtyard doesn’t provide the sun drenching you are looking for, then venture to the roof, where you can soak in the rays and the view, far from the hustle and bustle below. If in need of yet further relaxation then we recommend the onsite spa, with only eight rooms in the hotel, we don’t envisage a queue for treatment.

Just minutes from Fez’s famous blue gate and within the medina, Riad Laaroussa is perfectly situated for a spot of site seeing. Fez, a city of around one million inhabitants, is also home to one of the world’s largest contiguous pedestrian zones. This might not sound very exciting but what it means to you is that shopping in the main markets is a safe and fun experience. Back in the hotel have a bite to eat on the roof terrace while surveying the landscape as the sun sets lighting the sky in an array of pinks, red and yellows.

Your room

Choose from four very large suites and four rooms. Expect suites with original features in the form of exquisite mosaic floors and painted wood ceilings as well as a fireplace in each, to keep you warm on those chilli winter nights. All rooms have dark woods and deep colours throughout, giving a warm, welcoming feel and the light cast through the stained glass windows enriches the feel further. Each room is unique although all share wonderful high ceilings and an airy quality.

Why we like it

We love exploring the market in the morning and coming back to watch the chef prepare a genuine Fassi meal. With all that exertion we could think of nothing finer than to relax in the hamman in the evening and maybe move to the beds on the roof terrace if you have the strength.
