Sommerro, Oslo
A masterful renovation has transformed this Art Deco Oslo landmark into a glamorous modern sanctuary that we know you are going to love. Formerly the headquarters of an electricity company, this stately building crackles with energy in the heart of the city’s sophisticated Frogner neighborhood. Oslo’s cool crowd have made themselves very at home here.
In scale, we like to think of Sommerro as a grand ocean liner – where jazz drifts through its halls and restaurants (of which there are seven) and contemporary design makes every surface, right down to the doorhandles, feel perfectly right. This is very hard to achieve.
LOCATION
Set behind the Royal Palace in Oslo’s elegant west end, Sommerro places guests within the historic Frogner district – the perfect place to be if you want galleries, boutiques, bars, and eateries right at your doorstep. It’s also just ten minutes from Nationaltheatret station, giving seamless access to the wider city – as well as the airport. Across Frogner Park, you’ll spy Gustav Vigeland’s sculptural masterpieces and have an easy stroll to the new National Museum at Aker Brygge.
YOUR ROOM
Each of the hotel’s rooms celebrates Art Deco sophistication through considered details: oak parquet floors, hand-knotted rugs, and marble bathrooms. The Junior Suites elevate the experience with Murano glass chandeliers and bleached oak four-poster beds. Custom furnishings feature fabrics inspired by Norwegian artist Gerhard Munthe, while deep-soaking tubs in dusty pink marble offer a calming oasis from the (admittedly already laidback) city.
WHO IT SUITS
While all families are welcome, Sommerro’s atmosphere will work best for couples and older families. This is backed up by the sheer amount of fine dining and drinking you can do here. Intimate, mixological, and very sophisticated.
WHY WE LIKE IT
It’s simple: Sommerro makes you feel very, very glamorous – as if you’re walking around in The Great Gatsby. In part, that’s down to the live jazz, the eateries, and the cocktails. It’s also about the hotel’s staggering attention to detail, wellness suites, private cinema, and rooftop panoramas. It does a lot – and it does it perfectly.
SUSTAINABILITY
Sommerro’s environmental commitment honors its origins as Oslo’s electric company headquarters. This BREEAM Very Good-certified property operates entirely on renewable energy, utilizing advanced systems for ventilation and heat storage. The restoration prioritized preservation, selecting durable materials that age gracefully rather than requiring replacement. Meanwhile, their culinary program emphasizes seasonal local ingredients and sustainable seafood, while smart waste reduction tools ensure minimal environmental impact. It’s powerful stuff.
