A cluster of islands each more breathtakingly beautiful than the last, St Vincent and the Grenadines has always been there to indulge our need to island hop. Canouan, Mayreau, Petite Mustique, the Tobago Cays; we can think of nothing better than a luxury holiday in the Grenadines spent sailing around these stunning islands where our only concern would be where to drop anchor for an afternoon swim.
It sounds like a band. It is not. But there is a soft, calypso blues to this unaffected and easygoing string of Caribbean islands. Hummingbirds that purr between banana leaves; enthralling mountains that nudge their heads out of the warm, dizzyingly clear waters; and somewhere, Mustique, on the horizon. Heady, unexpected. You’ll tumble from place to place, more on suggestion and gut instinct than any rigid A to Z plan. Oh, and there are no traffic lights. Good, isn’t it?
Whether you’ve seen a lot of islands or none, this pretty Caribbean cluster – a smattering, some tiny and some simply small – are hard to beat. Bequia, with commanding views across the ocean, is only seven square miles. But it seems larger, with its tumbling jungled slopes and the seemingly wide natural harbour of Port Elizabeth. We’ll help you escape the crowds and perfect the art of lazy island hopping with an inquisitive private tour. Massaging your toes in the sand, you’ll cruise on to the private island of St Vincent, lap up the luxury of halting picnics among the Tobago Cays, and dive – leaping, joyously – into the pearly waters.
Why does ‘backwater’ carry negative associations? Backwaters – like St Vincent and the Grenadines – are unspoilt, uncrowded, and unpretentious. And you’ll still find lordly luxury among the islands. What’s not to like? Mostly, as with the Petit St Vincent, this is about getting you as close to the sand and water as possible, while tooling you up with casual beach restaurants, gourmet cuisine, and cocktails served in ultimate al fresco style.
With its glowing sunsets, incredibly deep, rich greens (picture rolling hills, tangled jungle vines, the smell of spice and coffee rising from the clearings), these islands simply shout ‘luxury honeymoon.’ But, more importantly still, they offer a truly secluded honeymoon without the fuss and bother of busy crowds. This is the ultimate ‘you’ time (both of you, that is).
