The Hotel del Coronado (affectionately referred to as ‘The Del’) is a majestic building that has been gracing the San Diego coastline for more than 125 years – its iconic red-top is a fitting splash of colour between the vibrant blues of the sky and the Pacific Ocean. In addition to its luxurious new Beach Village, the original hotel is comprised of Victorian architecture, meaning the rooms are unique in size and shape, something that adds even more charm to this much-loved bolt hole.
Sitting proudly amid 28 acres of beautiful oceanfront land, Hotel del Coronado is right on the Pacific coast and set against beautiful Coronado Central Beach. The iconic structure is the centrepiece of Coronado, a picturesque community located right across the bay from Downtown San Diego. Its location creates a deft balance of relaxed beach charm with city life, which is what San Diego is all about. Just 15 minutes south of the city’s international airport, this idyllic beach escape couldn’t be easier to get to.
Whether you choose to be in the historic Victorian building or one of the newer abodes throughout the rest of the resort, you will find classic, refined décor that truly captivates the beachfront setting of the hotel. Your room will be light and airy, so you can let the outside in while you recline on your sumptuous bed. And if you’re going with family in tow, book the Octopus Suite, where the children will have a fun, sea themed room.
Why we like it
The Del hits the spot when it comes to laidback luxury; it epitomise the SoCal lifestyle. There’s a lot to like about this place, but we really loved the private beach bonfire they offer. Tuck your toes into the sand, wrap a shawl over your shoulders and look out over the sparkling water as day turns to night. The hotel will provide you with everything you need for roasting s’mores on the open fire, with crackers, jumbo marshmallows and Hershey’s chocolate. Not literally the icing on the cake, but definitely a very sweet (and special) treat.
