This undeniably cool boutique hotel encapsulates everything we love about the city of San Francisco. It’s arty, cutting edge, and packed with diversity. Set in the pulsating heart of the city, once past the impressive stone exterior you’re met by a world of intricate detail, colour, and opulence. The Clift certainly doesn’t do things by halves, head though the glowing purple entryway to the soaring lobby designed by Philippe Starck which contains one of the most eclectic furniture collections in California. Chairs from Ray and Charles Eames, a coffee table by Salvador Dali, and sculptures by William Sawaya. In contrast to the luxe lobby the 366 rooms and suites are fresh, tranquil havens ensuring a good night’s rest after a night on the town.
Right in the heart of downtown San Francisco steps from Union Square shopping and the legendary Nob Hill, Clift is perfectly located for sightseeing, shopping and socializing. Only a forty minute hop from the airport you can touch down and be right in the middle of all the action.
The rooms at the Clift which range from the minimal and chic, to the opualant and grand are fresh, desirably modern and of course designed head to toe by Philippe Starck. The rooms are spacious and airy with styled with a soft palette of muted lilacs with pops of vibrant orange. For something a bit more luxurious, our favourite room is the 525sq ft Loft King, complete with king-size bed, an exquisite bathroom packed with fragrant goodies and a huge sunken bathtub. A Louis XVI-style armchair adds a touch of elegance and ceiling to floor mirrors flood the rooms with light.
why we like it
If you like Asian food then the Asia de Cuba restaurant is sure to get your taste buds tingling. Swathed in theatrical silk drapes, and centred around a vast Venetian mirrored dining table, its one seriously glamorous dining experience. The menu is a fusion of Asian and Latin influences, make sure to try the Cuban barbecue chicken served with sticky coconut rice and avocado cilantro fruit salsa, a house classic and San Franciscan favourite. The Redwood Room bar as all locals will tell is the place to see and be seen. With sexy red velvet furniture sit back and sip your mandarin lemongrass martini, and watch the cities well heeled saunter past.
