Namia River Retreat, Hoi An
Namia River Retreat sits on its own private river islet, just outside Hoi An – close enough to feel the pull of the ancient town, far enough to forget it entirely. Sixty private pool villas face either the Thu Bon River or the surrounding nipa palm forest, built from natural materials that sit comfortably within the landscape. Woven into every stay is a daily therapeutic wellness journey drawing on Thuốc Nam, Vietnam’s centuries-old tradition of Southern Herbology. This is not a place to rush.
LOCATION
Namia River Retreat sits on Con Ba Xa islet, just outside UNESCO-listed Hoi An Ancient Town. The complimentary shuttle boat that connects the two feels less like a transfer and more like a ritual – the river wide and golden beneath you, the Old Town’s lanterns beginning to glow as you approach.
YOUR ROOM
Each of Namia’s 60 villas is a private world: thatched ceilings, warm wood, neutral tones, and sunken bathtubs you won’t want to leave. Sliding glass doors open onto a private pool and terrace, with views toward either the river or the nipa palm forest beyond. We’d opt for the River Pool Villa – oriented toward the slow movement of the Thu Bon and just far enough from everything to feel truly apart. Families can book the two-bedroom villa without sacrificing privacy, while the Honeymoon Pool Villa, with its hot tub, sauna, and private spa room, is the obvious choice for couples.
WHO IT SUITS
Namia River Retreat draws travellers who want their stay to mean something – not just a beautiful room, but a real sense of having arrived somewhere genuinely different. Couples, particularly honeymooners, will feel it most acutely: the intimacy of a small property, the private Honeymoon Villa with its sauna and hot tub, and evenings spent releasing lanterns across the water. Families with children are genuinely thought of, with eco activities in the garden and bike trails that suit all ages.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The 90-minute wellness journey included in every stay is genuinely considered: a herbal hammam followed by a 60-minute traditional therapy, with blends prepared daily by the resident herbalist at The Apothecary based on how you feel that day. Two Wellness Pathways – Deep Rest and Body Balance – give shape to the experience depending on what you need. Beyond the spa, mornings at Namia River Retreat develop their own unhurried rhythm: a Dưỡng Sinh movement class by the river, a basket boat ride through the waterways, a strong Vietnamese filter coffee at The Merchant. The day begins gently, and deliberately.
SUSTAINABILITY
Namia’s commitment to its surroundings is embedded in the resort’s very foundations – mangroves replace concrete as the islet’s retaining walls, and bio-climatic architecture means air conditioning is avoided wherever the river breeze does the job instead. Indigenous plants and a bio-pond encourage native wildlife to flourish naturally. The hyper-local ethos means furniture is handcrafted within 50 kilometers, and fresh produce comes from nearby fishermen and farmers practicing regenerative agriculture. Rice flour straws, banana leaf packaging, and refillable water stations eliminate single-use plastics throughout.
