Somalisa Camp
For the quintessential safari experience with a magical twist, look no further than the Somalisa Camp. An intimate set up in the midst of some of the most wildlife-rich territory on the savanna, a stay at this traditional tented set-up promises an experience like no other – you’ll see why when you meet the neighbours…
LOCATION
Nestled in in north-eastern Zimbabwe, in the heart of Hwange National Park, Somalisa Camp sits on an ancient seasonal flood plain providing stunning views across the dusty savanna. Located on the Kennedy Vlei line, famous for its abundant wildlife, Somalisa is – literally – an oasis, as it provides one of the few permanent watering holes in the area, which attracts some very special guests – more on that shortly. The camp is accessible via a charter flight to Manga Airstrip in Hwange from Victoria Falls or Harare, and a short half-hour drive.
YOUR ROOM
The camp consists of seven Sail Tents, smartly finished in the traditional style; elegant touches such as solid teak furniture, copper roll-top bathtubs and bucket showers and elegant writing desks create a timeless and sophisticated safari vibe. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom and wood-burning stove for the chilly nights. There is no electricity in the evenings, but the paraffin lamps that light up the camp create a wonderful romantic atmosphere as the sounds of the bush serenade you to sleep.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The watering hole at Somalisa is known as the “Elephant’s Pool” and you will quickly see why: local herds of these gentle giants have claimed it as their own, and their daily visits result in one of the more unforgettable natural scenes you are ever likely to witness, as these massive beasts drink from the pool mere feet in front of you. Zebra, buffalo, giraffe, wildebeest are never too far behind – even lion and hyena come to drink in the darkness – and the perfectly positioned viewing deck provides a sweeping panorama across the plains to spot them.
