Trevor Hosie is the owner of Banubanu, a eco-wilderness retreat on Bremer Island in the Gove Peninsula, 15 kms off the coast of Nhulunbuy, Arnhem Land Northern Territory. Every day he wakes up to untouched beauty and we just had to ask him a few questions…
What was it about Gove Peninsula that made you settle here?
This is Australia’s last frontier, it is mostly untouched in a pristine environment that has the strongest Indigenous living culture still alive in Australia.
What is your favourite beach in NT, away from Banubanu?
Cape Arnhem, again it is a magnificent area of land that has stunning scenery like nowhere else that I have been to.
Tell us about a place known only to locals in Top End…
The Wessel Islands. These islands are remote and untouched – nobody lives there. What’s so good about the islands are the great cliffs on one side and white sandy beaches on the other. There are ancient rock art in caves and fresh water springs. The fishing is pretty good too. It is a great place for beachcombing.
What does your ideal itinerary at Banubanu involve?
8.00am: Wake up and enjoy a delicious continental breakfast.
9.00am: Meet the local Yolgnu community and learn about their hunting traditions or how to weave a basket.
11.00am: We take you aboard our boat Nomad and show you the sights of some of the surrounding islands in the Arafura Sea. You might be lucky enough to see some whales. If you’re a fishing enthusiast, we’ll take you to some of the best fishing spots where you can catch your dinner.
2.00pm: Return to Banubanu and enjoy a light lunch followed by homemade treats made by my wife Helen.
4.00pm: Lie on the beach with a book or watch turtle nesting on the beaches.
5.00pm: Enjoy a cold beer or glass of champagne as you admire the remarkable sunset.
7.00pm: End the day with a delicious two-course meal consisting of fresh fish and a mouth-watering dessert (our desserts are really good – believe me you’ll want seconds).

Where is the best fishing location in NT and Australia?

What is a traditional NT dish?
Beer battered Barramundi with chips and a salad.

What does a day in your life involve?
Working on maintaining Banubanu Wilderness Retreat and my boat Nomad.
Is there any species that is Indigenous to NT?
Northern Territorians are a species unto their own; there are a few variety of birds also known within the Territory.
Few are allowed in Arnhem Land, what makes the area so special?
Because of the protection from outside influences this has made it an untouched pristine landscape along with the rich Indigenous culture.
