Sam McConnell, A Perspective

Sam McConnell is a self-confessed adventurer and a guide we often use for our Epic Tomato trips. His travels have taken him across remote deserts and into unknown lands and thus the Northern Territory is a destination that excites him just as much as it does us.

I have spent much of my life in the pursuit of adventure. Always on the lookout for the next challenge; the next experience that will push me to my limits. My strength lies in traversing vast arid landscapes – from the Namib Desert to the Sahara, the places that excite me most are the places few have conquered. It is for this reason that Australia’s Northern Territory is, what I consider to be, a destination that embodies the true spirit of adventure travel.

If you’re wondering what I mean by spirit of adventure, then let me explain. Yes, the Northern Territory is remote, yes its landscapes and cultures are ancient and yes, conditions here can be fierce. Yet, this is also a part of Australia that lays claim to lush greenery, a cosmopolitan capital city and some of the world’s most luxurious accommodation. If you’re looking for the best of both worlds, this is it.

In the NT, experienced adventurers are able to head off on four day bushwalks through giant gorges, across red sand dunes and through deep valleys. They can drive 4WD’s across some of the country’s most challenging terrain, take overnight journeys and camp beneath a star strewn sky. Meanwhile, those seeking softer options are able to join exciting billabong tours on the hunt for crocodiles, are able to soar above rock escarpments by helicopter and chase the horizon across the desert on camel-back.

Over the years, I have discovered where my strengths lie, but for those of you yet to discover the adventurer within, the Northern Territory is the perfect place to test your limits.

Do I recommend it to aspiring adventurers? Most definitely.
