They say that TV rots the brain. This might be true, but it was a TV series – BBC’s Human Planet – that helped me to explore a world much bigger than the tiny village where I grew up. Age eleven, I watched intently as children from Venezuela’s Piaroa tribe toasted tarantulas for lunch, monks performed Tibetan sky burials, and a Bayaka tribesman called Tete scaled a forty-metre tree to retrieve ‘liquid-gold’ honey. My favorite section followed a Kazakh hunter, Silau, and his son, Berik, training a golden eagle named Balapan to catch foxes in Mongolia’s far-flung Altai Mountains.

Fast forward to a mid-winter Wednesday at my desk, watching a presentation by Black Tomato’s Mongolian partners. The subject turned to their work on documentaries, when pictured was a face I recognised: Silau, with Balapan atop his arm. Perhaps just a sweet coincidence, but it was humbling; like I’d come full circle. Who’d have thought that, one day, I’d work for a company who partnered with the team who brought that story to life.

Similarly, my role at Black Tomato is about telling stories. From our team, travelers and partners across the world – via our social media, emails, website, films, and more. When I’m not doing this, you’ll find me cooking up a storm, knitting, wandering curiously through London’s art galleries (coffee in hand), or hanging out with friends and family. All good things.

'some things really aren't worth the picture'

A closer look at Indonesia

There’s a series of photographs of my family crouched metres behind a Komodo dragon. It’s one of our favourites, taken by our (wonderful but perhaps over-committed) guide, Bona, as the dragon crawled – step by deadly step – towards him. Our exhilarated smiles turn to panic as it comes a little too close for comfort – and we begin shouting to Bona to move out of harm’s way. Some things really aren’t worth the picture.

Moment captured and everyone in fine fettle, we set off on a hike to spot more of these infamously carnivorous reptiles – guided by another local gentleman. He reassured us that we’d be safe should we run into any trouble, because he had a gun – ‘but it’s not really a gun’, he added. ‘It’s just a stick’. Great. We were indeed fine. And seeing the wild dragons on their namesake island was just magnificent.
