When I think back to the most remarkable road trip of my life, the Scottish Highlands come first – and most readily – to mind. It couldn’t have been further from my family’s roots in rural India and East Africa – which is probably why it left such an impression on me. It’s no surprise that years later, I now call Scotland home, spending my weekends exploring the hills and west coast isles.
Between then and now, curiosity took me around the world – from diving in the Philippines to dog sledding across Arctic Norway. A highlight? The time I spent living in New Zealand. I fell in love with the North Island, its pōhutukawa lined coasts, and the blend of Maori, Pacific, and European cultures that infuse everything from food to art and language. Learning about other cultures is, I think, the most rewarding part of traveling.
With a background in design, travel for me is all in the details. Working in the operations team, I have a hand in all the behind-the-scenes magic that goes into creating the most remarkable travel experiences and with Black Tomato, the possibilities are endless.
'There are always a few gems just a street away'
A closer look at SpainOne street back. That’s my golden rule for exploring somewhere new. But especially for finding a great place to eat in an unfamiliar city. It applies everywhere, but I found it especially rewarding in Barcelona recently (which lays claim to the best tapas in the world, I think).
While enjoying meals at recommended, top-listed establishments must – and should – be done, there are always a few gems just a street away. Those slightly rough around the edges, decked with mismatched tableware, locally owned and frequented spots. You may not remember the name, but the food you certainly will.
