Antarctica. Just saying its name sends shivers down your spine.
At once howling across tundra and whispering through icebergs, the untouched and the unknown beckons here. A frozen land that was previously the preserve of explorers on years-long expeditions, it may not be a world-first but it’ll certainly be a personal first. With our polar guides in tow and a pioneering route mapped out, strap on your snowshoes, pick up a paddle or take an icy plunge as you get to know the White Continent and the wildlife that call this place home. It’s time to join the Seven Continents Club.
As ever, if you can’t see it here then we can still plan it for you.
Wrapping itself around the South Pole, the Antarctic climate can be compared to few other places on earth. The winter months of July and August can reach bitter world-record lows, with the best time to visit running from November to March when temperatures usually hover just below freezing. Within the season, the early months are ideal for catching a glimpse of newborn penguins; whilst later in the season, warmer temperatures give rise to striking sunsets. No matter what month you go, our expert guides will set you a course that guarantees you always see the best.
Part of the allure of a private tour to Antarctica is the chance to glimpse its wildlife – to see penguins, orcas and seals in their natural habitat. With life on the White Continent so inhospitable, much of this wildlife makes its home in the icy waters that surround Antarctica, coming together along the Peninsula in the austral summer to feed and reproduce. For the best wildlife experience though, take a detour east to South Georgia where huge flocks of King Penguins can be found huddled together.
Every day and every island presents a new perspective in Antarctica – and perhaps a new challenge, too. Get a closer look at Glacier Alley one day from the unique vantage point of a sea kayak before snowshoeing across Paulet Island the next. The iceberg-littered landscapes, the fluke of a whale’s tail – everything looks different from these more intimate perspectives. For the most foolhardy amongst us though, little compares to the adrenaline rush of the polar plunge as you leap into the water and see how long you can bear it.
Antarctic Archipelago
Luxury travel in Antarctica undoubtedly means taking the intrepid route.
It means going where the wind takes you. Whether it’s kayaking through Glacier Alley, sailing to Cape Horn, or checking out Hope Bay and Deception Island; our polar guides have spent years sussing out the safest, pioneering routes. As for the wildlife? Watch penguins belly flop onto carved out ice, ogle at orcas hunting in the iceberg-strewn waterways and spot leopard seals lie back and watch the world go by.
King George Island
Skip the Drake Passage and arrive at the heart of the action.
The largest of the South Shetland Islands and typically the first stop on your Antarctic adventure; King George Island is where the research happens. With over 90% of the island permanently iced over and human habitation limited to scattered research stations, penguins and seals rule the kingdom here. We’ll guide you past Frei and Bellingshausen research stations, before hopping aboard a RIB and being whisked away to your luxury Antarctic vessel: The Magellan Explorer.
South Georgia Island
A penguin’s playground.
First discovered by Anthony de la Roché in 1675 and again by a Spanish ship named León in 1756, South Georgia Island is as remote as islands get. Rising out of the bitter Southern Atlantic Ocean and just 100 miles long by 23 miles wide, South Georgia Island plays home to few full-time residents. But the residents that do reside in the mountainous terrain? Colonies of king penguins, elephant seals and fur seals. A polar dream.
