Step back to a timeless era and experience the perfect blend of oriental tradition and contemporary style at the Banyan Tree Lijiang, nestled high up on a mountain plateau in Southern China. The 50 suites and 55 villas are the epitome of luxury and with the design based on traditional Naxi architecture, the resort effortlessly collaborates with its beautiful surroundings. The vibe here is extremely laid back; indulge in some R & R with a traditional age-old aromatherapy massage at the hotel’s holistic spa – they really are experts in ancient Chinese therapy.
Basking in the shade of the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and 2,000 metres above sea level the Banyan Tree offers unrivalled panoramic views of the unspoilt countryside. Just a short 40 minute trip from Lijiang Airport and before you know it you will be settled and ready to explore the wonders of the ancient towns of Lijiang and Shuhe only a ten minute walk away.
The feeling of space here is unbeatable; all of the villas and suites are designed around lush courtyards all leading to one central courtyard. Imagine sumptuous king size beds, traditional Naxi furnishings and upholstery and opulent en-suite bathrooms. Each Garden Villa features a lush private courtyard and 100 degrees hot-tub -just to top it off order some local plum wine or Chinese tea while you soak your troubles away.
Why we like it?
It would be impossible to stay here and not feel instantly rejuvenated, spend your days discovering the ancient neighbouring towns or do as the locals would and relax in one of the many ancient tea houses or striking temples. With Lijiang Old City centre being a UNESCO world heritage site, the Banyan Tree perfectly reflects this and both exude feelings of peace and serenity – we warn you though, it can be infectious. For an action-packed day out we loved the nearby Tiger Leaping Gorge, navigate hiking trails, waterfalls and pass through tiny villages and verdant farmland – this is a must.
