French Polynesia

Le Tikehau

On the private motu Tianoa in the Tuamotu Archipelago, Le Tikehau earns its sense of remove. This is French Polynesia with the crowds stripped away — an atoll that sees a fraction of the visitors drawn to Bora Bora or Moorea, and the only boutique hotel on the island. Just 29 bungalows and suites are spread across a private coral islet, tucked behind pink-sand beaches and a wild coconut grove, where genuine warmth and meaningful seclusion sit comfortably side by side. The lagoon is extraordinary, the pace is unhurried, and the feeling of having found somewhere quietly off the radar stays with you long after you leave.

Location

There’s something satisfying about the journey to Tikehau. The moment the turquoise geometry of the atoll appears below the aircraft window, you understand immediately why the effort was worth it. Air Tahiti flies direct from Papeete in around 55 minutes, and from Bora Bora in approximately 1 hour 40 minutes. From the airstrip, a 15-minute boat transfer skims across the lagoon to deliver you to the resort’s pink-sand shore.

Your Room

The 29 bungalows and suites are built in traditional Polynesian style, with bamboo, teak, and niau (woven coconut palm fronds), giving each space a handcrafted, locally rooted character. Our pick is one of the Overwater Suites: the most spacious option on the property, with a generous living room, deep soaking tub, and direct ladder access into the lagoon. For those wanting extra privacy, the Premium Overwater Bungalows sit at the far end of the pontoon, away from the main stretch. Families travelling together should look at the Royal Beach Villa — a sprawling estate with its own private pool and capacity for six.

Who It Suits

Le Tikehau is at its best for couples seeking genuine seclusion and the kind of pace that feels rare in French Polynesia. With its intimate, private islet setting, the property lends itself naturally to honeymoons and milestone celebrations, and the remoteness of the atoll adds to the sense of having found somewhere quietly extraordinary. That said, the Royal Beach Villa is a strong option for multi-generational groups or families travelling together, and the calm, clear lagoon waters make for ideal first snorkeling experiences.

Why We Like It

The Tikehau lagoon is reputed to be among the most abundant with marine life in all of French Polynesia — the result of careful stewardship and relatively few visitors. That alone makes it feel worth the detour. The lagoon boat tours stand out in particular: snorkeling, a visit to Bird Island to spot red-footed boobies, and a picnic lunch on a remote motu, all in one day. They deliver the kind of day that clients genuinely talk about long after they return home.

Sustainability

Pearl Resorts has woven sustainability into how Le Tikehau operates. Most notably, the resort partners with Manu, Polynesia’s ornithological society, to protect the nesting sites of endemic and migratory birds on the atoll.
