Birkenhead House, Hermanus
Nestled between the stunning Kleinrivier Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Birkenhead House is stylish, laid back and simply stunning. This is luxury beachside living at its very best.
LOCATION
Birkenhead House is situated on the rugged Kleinrivier cliffs of the South African coast and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean in the charming old fishing town of Hermanus, surrounded by unspoilt beaches and staggering views. The town itself is infamous for being the world’s best land-based whale watching spot, and with all this considered, the 90-minute drive from Cape Town or hour and a half drive from the airport seems completely worth it.
YOUR ROOM
Each of the hotels 11 double rooms boast stunning views over the Kleinrivier Mountain range and/or Walker Bay. All individually decorated suites come complete with a balcony, WI-FI, air-conditioning and a complimentary mini bar. You can take your pick of the rooms that are divided between Front House, Middle House and the upstairs Back House.
WHY WE LIKE IT
As soon as we found out Hermanus (often referred to as the ‘Riviera of the South’) is recognised by WWF as being one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world, we wasted no time in heading straight out to scan the horizon for these incredible creatures. You’re pretty much guaranteed to see them in the months between September and December, be it from your hotel room or the beach. The Voëlklip and Grotto beaches are ideal sighting spots but if you’re feeling adventurous, grab a paddle and head out on a guided kayak tour along the magnificent coastline and watch as the whales break the surface metres away from you. It’s needless to say you can leave the binoculars at home for this one.
