Avana Retreat, Mai Chau
High on a hillside in Vietnam’s remote north, Avana Retreat takes its cue entirely from the land beneath it. The Hmong, Thai, and Muong communities who shaped this landscape didn’t just inspire the design – they built it by hand, passing on traditional techniques that show in every detail of the 36 villas. A waterfall threads through the estate, feeding the three-tiered Cloud Pool and the Orchid Spa along its banks. The organic kitchen garden supplies the Green Chili restaurant. It’s a retreat built on the conviction that everything worth having is already here.
LOCATION
Avana Retreat sits in the mountains of northern Vietnam, about an hour from Mai Chau town and three and a half to four hours by road from Hanoi. The drive rewards patience: dense tropical forest eventually gives way to rice valleys and limestone peaks, with barely another tourist in sight by the time you arrive.
YOUR ROOM
Each of the 36 villas carries the same earthy design language: rammed-earth walls, thatched palm roofs, and rattan ceilings, with beeswax paintings honoring Hmong artistic traditions. Entry-level Bauhinia Mountain Suites offer valley-view balconies, while the Ferns Grand Mountain Suites add freestanding tubs framed by tropical garden windows. The Lantana Mountain Bungalow suits families: two bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms, and a living space with balcony. Our preferred choice is the two-bedroom Senna Hilltop Pool Villa – a private two-tiered infinity pool, sleeping up to eight, with a panorama of paddy fields and valley.
WHO IT SUITS
Avana’s mountain setting rewards curiosity more than it demands it. Couples will find their moment at the Pung Waterfall: a candlelit dinner at dusk, champagne in hand, the cascade as a living backdrop. Families are well looked after with a complimentary kids’ club, outdoor playground, ceramic painting workshops, and outdoor cinema nights keeping younger guests genuinely engaged while parents take their time over breakfast with valley views.
WHY WE LIKE IT
What distinguishes Avana Retreat is how consistently it draws you beyond its gates. The Jeep excursion carries just three passengers along backroads, crossing small rivers and passing through rice terraces and countryside villages — and it sets the tone for everything that follows. The cooking class works the same way: a chef-led ride to a local garden, where you hand-pick the vegetables you’ll prepare and eat together, and the Green Chili’s farm-to-table philosophy stops being a menu note and becomes something you’ve actually lived. Save an afternoon for the three-tiered Cloud Pool, fed directly from the waterfall above. Come in March, and the hills in bloom will be visible from the water’s edge.
SUSTAINABILITY
Ninety percent of Avana’s staff come from the surrounding Thai, Hmong, and Muong villages – not as a policy footnote, but as the foundation the whole retreat is built on. Traditional craft knowledge stays alive, guest revenue flows directly into the communities who shaped this landscape, and the connection between place and people that makes Avana Retreat worth visiting in the first place is actively protected. That same logic extends to the land itself. An on-site glass bottling plant recycles 300 bottles a day, eliminating over 100,000 single-use plastic bottles every year. More than 10,000 trees have been planted on the estate, and the Bamboo Forest sanctuary continues to grow – a long-term investment in the valley that guests come here to experience.
