Henry Jones Art Hotel, Tasmania

Along the waterfront of Hobart’s harbour is The Henry Jones Art Hotel: one of Australia’s fabulous dedicated art hotels. Housed inside a row of converted warehouses and a former jam factory (creating popular IXL jam), we love how this hotel juxtaposes the colonial look of its building with ultra-contemporary artwork for a real ‘old meets new’ atmosphere.

Location

An island off mainland Australia, Tasmania is covered in fantastic countryside with all the necessary rolling hills and green fields you could need. On the coast, Hobart is Australia’s second oldest city, and the echoes of its colonial beginnings are still around, for a quaint but bustling atmosphere. To say the locals here are relaxed would be an understatement, there is nothing hectic or stressful about this place, just cosy cafés, artisanal farmer markets, hip bars and a picturesque harbour all at your feet in The Henry Jones. And, if you’re looking to explore, we suggest swinging by the Salamanca Market on Saturdays for a dose of local arts and crafts or heading to some of those green spaces we mentioned for some rural bliss.

Your room

Sink in to the silk covers at night, and enjoy the sandstone walls of the bathroom: the ultra-modern design, perfect for an indulgent morning in luxury spent admiring the harbour views or the great art work hung in every room. In one of the luxury suites you can find out a little bit about Tasmania’s history: a learning holiday with a difference.

Why we like it

Designed by award-winning architects, Morris-Nunn & Associates, the hotel is a work of art itself, with original staircases, towering timber ceilings and authentic restored machinery alongside over 250 original Tasmanian artworks. Whether it’s in design, food, or comfort. It was easy to pick this as one of our favourite Australian boltholes.
