Domaine de Murtoli, Corsica
Corsica is France’s ‘Isle of Beauty’. And there’s no doubt that Domaine de Murtoli – a property dotted across a private 6,000-acre estate – fits right in. This is a secluded escape; a peaceful retreat. One for travellers looking to lose themselves in a wilderness of hills, valleys, beaches and ocean. These sublime surroundings – which form part of a rural working farm – are unrivalled. It’s no wonder this is one of the most sought after stays in Europe.
LOCATION
Corsica is accessible on a short flight from mainland France and other European countries. Domaine de Murtoli then lies just a 25-minute drive from Figari or 90 minutes from Ajaccio. In 6,000 acres on the southwest of the island, you’re almost off the grid here. In the best possible way. The property is scattered with artfully restored old stone shepherd’s huts and beautiful private villas – on an estate so big that you’d likely get lost without a map. Some are beachside, others tucked away in the hills or valleys overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. Idyllic, wherever you choose to reside.
YOUR ROOM
20 individual shepherd’s huts and private villas are dotted around the estate. With an air of rustic luxe, you’ll find local stone, lime walls, chestnut shutters, oak and terracotta floors – accompanied by crisp white linens and tasteful furnishings in natural tones. Many have their own private plunge pools, too. Don’t mind if you do.
For guests wanting an equally beautiful but less secluded atmosphere, the estate’s Hotel de la Ferme also has nine simple and luxuriously decorated suites, with its own pool set amongst the vineyards.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Between the olive grove and the vegetable gardens, the hotel is in the heart of a farm, which grows its own fruit and vegetables, harvests essential oils, and makes its own cheeses. These organic roots underpin dining in the property’s three excellent restaurants. Table de la Ferme serves exquisite one Michelin star modern Corsican cuisine; Table de la Grotte is a romantic, candlelit dining experience in a cave; Table de la Plage sits on the beach, serving fresh seafood. Or dine in your room. It’s entirely up to you. Sublime, whichever you choose.
