An Icelandic Summer Sojourn

It’s not always easy choosing the perfect holiday when you have the whole family to think about. That’s why, after years of exploring the stunning wonders of Iceland, we have crafted a tried and tested family adventure to blow everything before it out of the glacial water. There are few places on earth that provide as many eye-opening, jaw-dropping vistas as Iceland for both little ones and grown-ups alike. From hiking across icy landscapes and riding horseback through volcanic fields to boating through hidden caves, your memories will last a lifetime.

You’ll arrive in downtown Reykjavik to check into the ultra-chic Canopy by Hilton and get a good night’s rest in the lap of luxury. Unwind and let the calmness of scenic Iceland soak in.

Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss

Your private driver will collect you after a leisurely breakfast and whisk you off to the beautiful plains of Thingvellir National Park. Here, the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates split, creating an incredible setting. Your introduction to Iceland will feel nothing short of epic with scenery to awaken the soul of the most travelled explorer. Visit a dairy farm for an organic, home grown lunch and mingle with all of the farm animals before heading off to the erupting hot springs of Geysir, where natural, hot water shoots out of the ground seventy metres into the air. Gaze in wonder at the global phenomenon before immediately visiting another. Gullfoss waterfall roars with plunging waters and breath-taking beauty. After a day of the purest, freshest air filling your lungs, head back to your hotel for a five-star dinner.

Viking Horses, Viking Farm and Thjorsardalur Valley

Another day’s discovery lies in wait for the whole family, first by being introduced to the unique ‘Viking’ or Icelandic horses. Famous for their fifth gait and beautiful colouring, learn about these animals only found on the island, and go on an exhilarating horseback riding tour suitable for all ages. The afternoon brings a visit to visit to an open air museum featuring a Viking farm to learn about the history of the land before venturing to more awe inspiring scenery at Gjain in the heart of the Thjorsardalur Valley. Marvel at the oasis of waterfalls, lush colours of the land and dramatic lava formations. The varied, expansive roads home will have you reaching for your camera at every turn.

Westman Islands

Today we will chauffeur you south and ignite the imagination with boating adventures around Heimaey, one of the Westman Islands. Take the ferry from Landeyjarhöfn Harbour and arrive on an island known as the largest nesting ground of the North Atlantic puffin. It is also one of Iceland’s most successful fishing ports, home to numerous caves and sea cliffs and offering the chance to go on the adventure of a life time in a RIB safari. The eruption in 1973 of the mountain’s volcano Mt Eldfjall (‘Fire Mountain’) means a hike to the top provides a fascinating view of houses buried beneath the lava flow which still gently steams. As if one volcano isn’t enough, the more recently erupted Eyjafjallajökull will be in perfect view on the ferry back to the mainland. Rest up as you still have two action packed days to go.

South Coast and Glacier Hike

When it comes to scenery, the south of Iceland is simply mesmerising. Glacier-tipped volcanoes, cascading waterfalls and black sand beaches all vie for your gaze. The cavernous drop of Seljalandsfoss is the setting of perhaps Iceland’s most iconic waterfall. After a quick stop it’s time to strap on those crampons and get ready to traverse the glacial beauty of Sólheimajökul. As the whole family work their way across the blue ice, take a moment to appreciate a moment that will never be forgotten. Take your pick from Skogafoss waterfall or Reynisfjara beach to experience on the way back. Neither will disappoint.

Shopping & Blue Lagoon

On your final day in Iceland we have mixed exploring the delights of Reykjavik’s shops, galleries and museums with the ultimate relaxation experience in the Blue Lagoon Spa. Reykjavik is a delightful mixture of quaint architecture, unique cultural landmarks and art that embodies the landscapes. Stroll through the pretty streets in the morning stopping whenever it takes your fancy. In the afternoon we’ve almost saved the best until last. The warm bright aqua-blue waters of the Blue Lagoon Spa provide picturesque tranquillity for all the family. Basking in the mineral rich waters, famous for their healing powers, will round off the perfect, unforgettable family trip.
