Italy
Passalacqua, Lake Como
Among immaculate acres of landscaped gardens that sweep down to the southwest shores of Lake Como, you’ll find Passalacqua. This grand 18th Century villa, once host to some of the most accomplished minds in history – from Napoleon Bonaparte to Vincenzo Bellini – has been revived across three years of restoration – and emerged as the perfect picture of Italian elegance. Murano chandeliers, sweeping staircases, ornate ceilings and touches of opulent gold. Time spent here is all about lingering in its timeless romance.
LOCATION
Passalacqua is perched above the picturesque village of Moltrasio – minutes from the city of Como, and just a 45-minute drive from Milan Malpensa International airport. Its setting on the lake is idyllic, with perfect views over sapphire waters, landscaped grounds descending to a private jetty – where boatman Beppe waits to sail you into the sunset. A storied shoreline, frequented by none other than James Bond in Casino Royale (2006).
YOUR ROOM
This grand estate has 24 rooms and suites in total, split across three buildings: the Palazz, the Villa, and Casa al Lago. Whichever you choose, you’ll find each with a distinctive character, sophisticated charm, and – of course – views over the lake. Accents of sage green, rich amber or blush pink complement antique features and marbled bathrooms. If you’re after something more palatial in character – and size – we’d recommend the Bellini suite, with a neoclassical music room at its centre.
WHY WE LIKE IT
We keep mentioning the seven-acre surroundings of Passalacqua, but we promise it’s for good reason. Perfectly manicured gardens, more than fifteen fountains, olive groves, a fragrant rose garden and lake view swimming terrace with greenhouse bar. Made all the more enjoyable, we think, accompanied by the bittersweetness of an Aperol spritz. With plenty of ice.
The garden-to-table approach to dining is another standout at Passalacqua – where you can visit the open kitchen to talk through your menu for the day or partake in an ad hoc pasta making session using freshly laid eggs from the chicken shed. What’s not to love?
