The Strand Hotel

Built in 1901 by the Sarkies brothers (responsible also for Raffles Singapore) in the heart of the city, the hotel has become an iconic landmark of understated elegance and charm.

Location

In the heart of downtown Yangon, The Strand is just half an hour drive from the airport in prime position on Strand Road. Being in just the right spot, it’s easy to grab a guide and head out on foot to explore the frenetic banks of the Yangon River or get up close and personal with the famous Sule pagoda.

Why we love it

Something feels very right about sitting in the Strand café drinking freshly brewed Burmese tea whilst nibbling on dainty sandwiches and pastries. As with so many ex British colonies, afternoon high tea is observed with reverence and importance in Burma and is executed nowhere better than at the Strand. Surrounded by black and white photos of the countries monks, sit back and watch the hustle and bustle of one of the cities main thoroughfares unfold just outside the lounge windows.
