When’s the best time to go to Italy?

Italy is a frequent favourite with honeymooners, families and solo travellers alike, but we’ve got all the insider’s tricks to ensure you experience it without the crowds and discover a little slice of Italy just for yourselves.

As with anywhere, different regions with different features and climates are best visited at particular times. But more generally, the spring months from April to June see the blooming of beautiful wildflowers and plenty of fresh local produce in Italy. The other side of peak summer season, the autumn months from September to October see warm temperatures and the Italian wine harvest. These times can also mean better deals on some accommodation and fewer tourists.

How long should an Italian honeymoon be?

With so much to see and do, you’ll need a good few days to get the most out of Italy. As a general rule, we’d recommend a minimum length of 7 nights. But, as with all our trips, your honeymoon will be tailored exactly to you, meaning you can spend as long or as short a time in Italy that suits. This could mean Rome, Florence or Venice for only a few days, perhaps combined with some added time to explore Sicily, or a jaunt around the northern lakes to make it a longer, more leisurely trip.

We’re well versed in creating honeymoons, from just a few spectacular days to a resplendent three-week exploration of the country. That’s part of our expertise – getting to know you, what you’re interested in, the emotions you want to feel – and perfectly planning from there.

Hillside views in Tuscany

Where to go in Italy on honeymoon

Lake Como

Gorgeous, charming and effortlessly easy-going, Lake Como is the centrepiece of the Italian ‘lake district’, a region including the lakes of Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo, and Garda. Marked by its balmy microclimate and glamorous prestige, an air of faded grandeur and old-fashioned mystique surround its waters, bays, and lake-side villas.

The scenery here is simply stunning – so whether it’s an al fresco lunch in Bellagio or a tour of the lake on a private boat, couples who honeymoon here in the summertime are in for a treat.

Tuscany

Bursting with romantic villages and picture-perfect countryside, Tuscany is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy, home to the cities of Florence, Siena and Pisa. From world-class wines and Michelin-starred tasting menus to winding bicycle paths and hot air balloon adventures; this is what a tailor-made honeymoon in Tuscany looks like.

If you’d like, you can explore the city of Florence in the company of Sylvia, one of our best guides, who will introduce the city from whichever perspective you want to see it from. Or, for those with an eye for the Renaissance, we’ll take you through the iconic Uffizi Gallery, granting you privileged access to the usually off-limits Vasari Corridor.

Crater on Mount Etna, Sicily

Sicily

Located in the Mediterranean Sea, just off Italy’s coast, Sicily is our much-adored secret when it comes to an Italian honeymoon. From picturesque cliff-top towns to ancient ruins, mouth-watering traditional restaurants to volcanic wonders, Sicily has it all. And for adrenaline junkies and landscape lovers, it’s a must-visit – especially in the month of September.

Over the years we’ve created unbreakable bonds with luxury hoteliers and our expert guides on the ground. Rest assured we’ll put you up in the best sea-view suite, arrange your helicopter ride over Mount Etna perfectly in time for the Sicilian sunset and take you to the clearest spot for snorkelling around Italy’s Aeolian Islands.

Here’s some more experiences that made our list of the top five things to do on a honeymoon to Sicily.

The Dolomites

You may have seen photographs of the Dolomites in Italy, but they only scratch the surface of what these mighty mountains offer – particularly in the summer months (July is our favourite time to visit).

Accompanied by one of our best alpine guides, adventure goers will get the chance to dive deep into the mountain range on an unbeatable journey through Pian de Frataces. Not for the faint-hearted, we’ll get you harnessed up with our expert guide who’ll take you on a via ferrata climb up the peaks. Once you’ve got to grips with the iron paths, we’ll drop you at a traditional rifugio where you’ll spend the evening dining out on delicious traditional Dolomite cuisine.

Amalfi Coast honeymoons in Italy

The Amalfi Coast

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of our favourite honeymoon destinations for sun-seekers in springtime. We won’t, however, spill every detail here – where’s the fun in that?

But know this: winding past neatly planted vineyards and cliff-top villages on the idyllic Amalfi Drive, Roberto your chauffeur knows exactly where to stop for the perfect picture, which bar serves the best homemade limoncello, and the perfect time to reach Ravello for sunset.

Venice

It may seem like an obvious destination for an Italian honeymoon, a cliché for the hopeless romantics – and we’d totally agree – but perhaps for different reasons.

It’s not a tourist gondola ride with four strangers; it’s a private lesson with our friend and expert gondolier, Guiseppe. It’s not dinner at that restaurant you first laid eyes on; it’s at a fresh fish restaurant under one of the city’s oldest bridges. It’s not a champagne toast in the hot tub (although don’t get us wrong that’s nice too); it’s a prosecco picnic in the vineyards of Valdobbiadene down Prosecco Road. We know the quieter spots in Venice, the hidden gems to take you to on your special getaway.

And if Venice has grabbed your attention, here’s five more reasons the Floating City so irresistible for honeymooners.

Rome

Rome. Roma. The Eternal City. The list of epithets goes on. But whatever you call it, we’ve got the perfect honeymoon itinerary for history buffs and passionate foodies in this, the sensual, true city of love.

Home to some of the world’s most famous art collections, ruins and eateries, our Travel Experts have spent years perfecting the ultimate honeymoon itineraries based on their own adventures in Rome. You’ll meet with a top historian for a journey deep into the city’s history with private tours of the Trevi Fountain, the mausoleum of Augustus and the Pantheon, before candlelit dinners with local Italian wine and fresh pasta at some of Rome’s undiscovered restaurants.

Puglia

Forming the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia is renowned for its ancient farmlands, dramatic coastline and quirky hilltop towns.

Away from the hordes of tourists in some of Italy’s better-known regions, it’s here in the south that you’ll lose yourself in the lanes of Lecce, sip your way through Salento’s vineyards, and taste the fresh figs of Alberobello in a chef-led cooking class. Best visited in the summertime, lovers of culture and photography will feel utterly in their element.

Our very own Alister and Owen captured Puglia in its purest form on film in a recent summer. Watch it here.

What can we do in Italy on honeymoon?

There’s no end to the answers we could give to this question, but below are a few of our favourite experiences for Italian honeymooners.

Hire a vintage car for the day in Lake Como

After being shown a variety of routes and spots by your concierge, you’ll pick up the keys to an Alfa Romeo Duetto spider; your elegant automotive transport for the day. You’ll explore in style the green mountains, azure lakes and rolling valleys that define beautiful Lake Como and, if hunger strikes, the brunch hamper provided will enable you to stop off for one of the most scenic picnics of your life.

A private cooking class in Tuscany

Giulietta will be your host and cooking instructor, and from her hillside Tuscan villa, you’ll embark on a private cooking class in Chianti. Hearing captivating tales of Tuscan cuisine and tasting much-loved family recipes, you’ll learn to prepare focaccia, the technique of making the perfect risotto con zucca, and the ingredients for Giuletta’s one-of-a-kind lasagne. After showing off your culinary talents, enjoy the delicious lunch you’ve prepared, accompanied with a glass – or three – of local Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano wine.

Lake Como

Get to know Europe’s highest volcano on a private jeep tour

On a private jeep tour of Sicily’s Mount Etna, you’ll take in its changing landscapes, lava flows and otherworldly fauna. 3,329 metres high, this unique adventure will take you through surreal lunar landscapes. And what else lies in store, you ask? Rich volcanic soil makes for perfect vineyard terrain, so you’ll finish your exploration with a private wine tasting at Monaci. Stroll through the estate vineyards with an expert sommelier and discover ancient winemaking traditions.

A night of stargazing in the Dolomites

Get to know the Dolomite mountains with an evening visit to the Helmut Ullrich Astronomical Observatory. Your expert astronomer will map out the night skies for the two of you, beneath a natural cupola at the foot of the Tofane mountains. To cap off the evening’s romance, we’ll then whisk you off for a traditional alpine dinner in a mountain chalet, complete with star-spangled views across the Dolomites.

Exclusive access to the Vatican in Rome

If history and culture intrigue you, we can arrange exclusive access to the museums of the Vatican before they open to the public. After all, not many people can say they’ve enjoyed the wonders of the Vatican in complete privacy – so take your time as you stroll through the famous Raphael Rooms and into the splendour of St. Peter’s Basilica. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
