Borgo Pignano, Tuscany
Nestled deep in the remote Tuscan countryside, Borgo Pignano is a hidden gem that exudes authentic rural charm with a dose of magic. Set on 750 acres of pristine rolling hills, this unique retreat was originally a hamlet dating back from the Etruscan times. With only 14 rooms in the main 18th-century villa and a handful of casas dotted around the hamlet, at this intimate retreat you can’t help but feel instantly revived. A place that doesn’t just look good, but feels good, Borgo Pignano specialises in organic bio-dynamic homegrown produce which makes for the perfect refuel after days exploring the surrounding countryside – or perhaps just hitting the spa.
Location
Borgo Pignano is a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Florence and Pisa and just 40 minutes from Siena, making it easily accessible from Tuscany’s main cities – yet keeping it worlds away from the hustle and bustle that comes with them. From the Borgo, you’ll find plenty to do as you trek and ride out into the rolling countryside or visit local towns of Volterra and San Gimignano for art and culture.
Your room
Choose from 14 elegantly furnished rooms and suites, some with their original frescos and all with white marble or travertine bathrooms and spectacular views. Little slices of Tuscany, they are perfect spaces to retreat to. For families or those travelling with friends, find your own space as you hole up in the spacious Villas and Cottages. Whilst for honeymooners, some of the Borgo’s smaller casas will prove irresistible. Whoever you are, during the summer months, come together to lounge by the pool and enjoy open-air pizza evenings with a glass of organic wine in hand.
Why we like it
We love the philosophy behind Borgo Pignano where the emphasis is on experiences connecting with wellness and sustainability. Take a tour of the verdant vegetable garden, learn to make fresh pasta and soda bread, make homemade soaps and honey with the bee-keepers or enjoy a yoga class in the studio. For children, there’s tons to keep them entertained whilst keeping them connected to the beautiful natural surroundings too. For foodies – the gastronomic delights of Villa Pignano are an absolute must-try.
Sustainability
Starting with its sustainable infrastructure, the hotel’s eco-friendly ethos stretches throughout many of its operations. Making use of the large estate, Borgo Pignano supports the environment through solar energy, harvesting and recycling rainwater, woodchip-fired boilers and organic vegetable gardens.
