Palazzo Margherita, Basilicata
If Italian authenticity and intimacy are what you desire then Palazzo Margherita is the perfect fit. This beautiful boutique hotel in Bernalda is a true 19th Century Palazzo, completely restored by Francis Ford Coppola and French designer Jacques Grange. It has nine elaborate rooms each of which is totally unique, decorated with original paintings and furnishings. Francis Coppola’s family contributed to the design of each room and this conviviality is reflected in the feeling and amenities of Palazzo Margherita. Fantastic food and film complete the essence of the resort, with movies projected daily in the opulent Salon and bar this, is definitely a top choice for any movie buff.
Location
This handsome hotel is just a short drive away from either Bari or Brindisi airports. It sits opposite the main square in Bernalda, a small rural town in the Basilicata region of Southern Italy. The area is relatively unknown to tourists so Palazzo Margherita is the perfect introduction to the stunning region. Like the hotel, the surrounding countryside is rich in history and home to thriving local agriculture and vineyards.
Your room
Choose between suites in classic Italian country house style or with more extravagant baroque features in the main house. The three outside suites open up onto the inner courtyard or a private garden, characterized by rustic barn-like doors, vaulted ceilings and clawed foot bathtubs. In the main house, you’ll find 20th Century Italian decor with a modern twist in the suites, think classic chandeliers and Juliette terraces. Our favourite has got to be Suite Four; inspired by Sofia Coppola it is fresh, delicate and feminine. Hand-painted frescos adorn the walls and ceilings and French doors extend out on to a private terrace which overlooks the pretty courtyard.
Why we like it?
From the rooms to the food and wine everything in the Palazzo Margherita feels like it has been made with care. Complimentary cooking courses in the Eat-In-Kitchen are great fun for parents and kids alike after all nothing tastes better than a homemade Italian pizza. The salon’s movie database is second to none with handpicked classics chosen by Francis Ford Coppola himself, not to mention the gorgeous gardens and herb gardens that transport you back to the Roman times.
