The best locations to see Autumn foliage: The Cotswolds and Stockholm to Tuscany and Japan

Between swapping out our iced coffee for a warm latte and grabbing our favorite cozy jackets on the way out the door, it’s clear that colder days are on their way. When you think of the Autumn season you likely think of crisp afternoons spent apple picking, scarves, and gloves or pumpkin carving, but when we think of this season we only think of one thing – rich and vibrant foliage.

We travel the world extensively and have the chance to see countries in all their seasons and Autumn is the one season that we always look forward to here at Black Tomato. We’ve pulled together a list of locations that are great year round, but particularly stand out with their distinct and bright colors.

So, grab your favorite pumpkin flavored delicacy (we’re more of a Pumpkin Spice Latte bunch) and scroll through to see a few of our top picks for the best foliage around the world.

Oregon, USA

Close to half of Oregon is forested, so this is the first location that we think of for OMG-worthy foliage. Rent a car, drive North, and find yourself amongst the changing seasons and the fresh smell of pine (and don’t forget to look up- sometimes the best view is right above you).

Stockholm, Sweden

No need to venture too far from home with Stockholm’s finest time of year right around the corner. The abundant colors are enough to send your wanderlust into overdrive and right into the holiday season.

The Great Wall, China

As one of the most popular tourists’ destinations across the world, visit a classic monument and hike through nature at the Great Wall. We typically like to visit the top of the wall for lunch overlooking years and years of history and then take a short trip to Yangshuo or Lijiang for a real treat. Think big trees, calm waters, and an afternoon tea by the fire.

Bavaria, Germany

Go for Oktoberfest, stay for the turning of the seasons. Bavaria has one of the most romantic foliage with an array of multi-colors accompanied with castles painted perfectly in the background.

Kyoto, Japan

You want to travel to Kyoto for the cherry blossoms, right? It’s little known that Japan boasts a spectacular foliage with leaf-strewn paths and golden mountaintops, so why not head to Kyoto this season for its dramatic peaks and unparalleled Autumn coloring.

Our Travel Expert, Alys, says to visit during late November or early December to see it in full bloom.

Bellwald, Switzerland

‘Tis the season for long hikes and spiced apple ciders below in the city and atop in the Swiss Alps. Start your journey in Zurich for a glimpse into the city buzz and then head up to Bellwald to relax and enjoy the scenic views around you.

Denali National Park, Alaska, USA

For all of our USA friends, Denali National Park boasts a breathtaking landscape and might just be the perfect backdrop to a classic holiday greeting card. Home to lodges nestled in the wide-open wilderness, this destination might even be the Thanksgiving away you’re looking for.

Tuscany, Italy

Ahh, wine country. It’s not a celebration unless we include one of our favorite destinations for year-round, Tuscany. What better way to get in the holiday spirit than with a good game of truffle hunting through the vineyard?

Vancouver, Canada

As the world’s second-largest country and arguably the best place to escape to for their breath-taking nature, Canada has it all. Enjoy the sweet changing of seasons and explore the epic wilderness in Vancouver this fall.

Patagonia, Chile

Chile is your ticket to best of both worlds with wildlife adventure and vibrant city life. Horsebacking through the beautiful array of rustling fall foliage? Now, that’s a memory that’ll last forever.
